Leif Tronstad was a Norwegian chemist, resistance fighter, and soldier during World War II. He was born on March 2, 1903, in Bergen, Norway, and studied chemistry at the Norwegian Institute of Technology. During the war, he played a significant role in the Norwegian resistance as a leader of the Grouse team. In 1943, he was appointed the head of the Norwegian Independent Company 1, also known as Kompani Linge, which was a British military unit fighting in Norway. He was also influential in the production of heavy water, an essential component in nuclear technology. In 1945, he was killed in action during a sabotage mission against German heavy water production facilities. He was posthumously awarded the War Cross with sword, Norway's highest military honor.
